Besides what you hear from people that try to sell you the “secret of getting grants” there are no government grants for small businesses. Grants don’t have to be paid back and unlike the “bailouts” in the news a grant like you are looking for don’t exist.

I do this for a living, I work for a government economic development agency. The Small Business Administration (SBA) do have micro loan programs for small businesses but it would be unusual for them to give you a loan to refinance your car loan.

You can read about them at

If your not a 501c3 (non profit exempt entity) it will be difficult to get a Fed grant, unless you know somebody. I would try your local chamber of commerce, they definitely provide start up grants to small businesses. The catch? TONS OF PAPERWORK!

    Good luck.

Even if your for-profit grant, grants are typically not allowed to pay off car loans.

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website

“The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments.”

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) and Grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.
